Alex Goes to Toyland
Children’s Book Concept Design & World Building.
Meet Alex! The main character of my first children’s book.
This book is the product of an assignment during my time at SCAD. The objective of the assignment was to take an original story and recreate it! We designed our characters, built our worlds, and illustrated covers, spreads, and end pages for our books. I chose to base my story off the famous, Alice in Wonderland.
Alex’s Character Turnaround Sheet
Cover Page Illustration
I created a double page spread for the assignment and went with a scene of Alex riding the rollercoaster through Pillow Fort Mountain!
For this assignment, we had to create four different biomes for our stories. Each biome had to have an animal, geographical feature, and plant life, as well as a still from what the biome looked like.
World Building!
Ball-Pit Beach!
I created this biome as Alex’s entry-point into Toyland. The water is full of plastic balls, and the palm trees and clams are all plastic.
Forever Forest!
In the Forever Forest, time stands still. The rocks are all covered in rock climbing handles, the trees are carboard cut out trees, and the caterpillars are stuffed animals!
Pillow Fort Mountain!
Everything in this biome is soft and squishy! The trees are stacks of pillows, the caves are pilllow forts, and even the sheep are made of cushions.
The Grasslands!
The final biome of Toyland. All the grass is made of turf, the trees lego, and the animals inspired by the Hungry Hippo game I played as a child.
End Pages inspired by Alex’s pajama set.
